Course Description
Whether a novice or an experienced speaker when beginning the course, every student will learn how to be a better public speaker. Creative activities, vivid examples, annotated speech samples, and solid foundation of classic and contemporary rhetoric provide students with a strong understanding of public speaking. The purpose of the course is to develop and/or strengthen logical, analytical, and critical thinking skills used to construct and deliver arguments and speeches in an extemporaneous manner. Rather than monotonous lecturing, class meetings are constructed through a workshop-type format where full participation is encouraged and expected. Given the workshop format of the course, I highly encourage interaction, discussion, and suggestions from every class member. If a particular class style or activity was effective or ineffective, exciting or dull, or unique or repetitive; I expect someone to tell me. The only way I know what works and what does not is if someone tells me. This is your class, so whether or not it is enjoyable is completely up to you!
