Gangs of New York Mid Term Paper

Dante Ferretti has been the production designer for many highly regarded European and American films, including Interview with a Vampire, Titus, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and Fellini's City of Women. Learn how he recreated nineteenth-century Manhattan at Cinécitta Studios in Italy for Martin Scorsese's The Gangs of New York at http://www.theasc.com/magazine/jan03/mean/index.html. Since Gangs is a period piece, Ferretti based its design on careful research, but he also took some liberties in order to convey the film's central themes and emotional power. How, for example, did he create different color palettes to highlight the class distinctions that are central to Scorsese's film? What role did digital augmentation play in the design process and why? What does this article tell you about the relationship of a director and a production designer?

The Pawnbroker & Thematic Elements Chapter 2
Posted: Sep 21, 2004
Chapter 2: Thematic Elements
As this chapter in your textbook points out, the action and characters in a film often have a subtle thematic significance beyond the apparent context of the film itself.
Do you find the filmmakers's analysis of the immigrant experience theme convincing? Do you agree with the contention that this
Film’ s themes are relevant 40 years later. If so why? If not, why not?
Why, not? What do you believe to be the inherent universal themes? Do you think this film is an American classic, If so why? If not, Why not?

You can also incorporate the PBS shows and links below into your essay. Please post it on your home page and the Discussion Area on our Discover NY course web site.
REMEMBERING SEPTEMBER 11TH September 11, 2001 has taken its place in history alongside such days as D-Day, Pearl Harbor, and JFK's assassination. But it is an event that stands alone in contemporary memory. It was a day that shattered America's sense of security and forced the start of a new era in America's international relations and outlook. AMERICAN EXPERIENCE remembers the victims and their families, and offers an in-depth look at one of the targets terrorists attacked on September 11 -- the World Trade Center

Post Internet Database Essays on Discussion Thread
Posted: Sep 7, 2004
1. Visit the Internet Movie Database (http://www.imdb.com/), type in the title of a movie of your choice, and read five external reviews of the film. What conclusions does each reviewer draw about its meaning and value? What analysis or examples are provided to support the evaluation? Does the reviewer show any signs of categorical rejection or actor worship? Which review do you think is most effective in expressing the experience and meaning of the film?
Read your classmates postings and then post your essays on your respective classtime home web site Discussion Page Thread. Save a copy in a folder you create on your laptop entitled DSY on Film folder.
